A TOEFL platform with AI grading for writing + speaking (via Gemini), adaptive testing, spaced repetition for vocabulary, and gamification that keeps users coming back every day.
Offline TOEFL courses in Indonesia cost IDR 3–6M and run on rigid schedules — especially hard for students living away from home and working professionals. Existing TOEFL apps only give generic feedback on writing and speaking, even though those two skills move the band score the most. Our challenge: build a platform that grades all 4 skills fairly and keeps users coming back daily.
We rejected 3 features from day one: full offline downloads (bloat + complicated DRM), a social feed (no proven conversion value yet), and live tutoring (expensive to operate; self-learning first). The focus went to 5 pillars: adaptive mock tests, SRS vocabulary, AI grading, gamification, and admin tools for the content team.
Laravel 12 + Filament 5.3 for the admin panel (16 resource modules), a Sanctum-based API for mobile, and Flutter for the Android + iOS app. AI grading: prompt engineering on Gemini 2.5 Flash with the TOEFL 1–6 band rubric — structured JSON output with a score and per-criterion feedback, dispatched as an async Laravel job. Event pipeline: LessonCompleted → XP award → streak check → achievement notification.
MVP + mobile launch in 12 weeks. The client's content team uploads lessons and mock tests through Filament without a developer. AI grading stays within ±0.5 band of human tutors in internal QA. Subscription revenue model at IDR 49k/month — far more accessible than offline courses. Currently scaling user acquisition.
